Five Favorite Practices--Gerard Houllier, French FA Technical Director (Part 1)
The following is Part I of a two-part training session by Gerard Houllier. Houllier presented this session at the 2008 NSCAA Convention in Baltimore. Instead of presenting a training session, he presented a number of exercises that he used with Liverpool and the National Team. This article originally appeared in the March-April 2009 issue of Soccer Journal.

EXERCISE 1
Three men and one ball

Purpose:
Attention, focus, adapt to what is going to happen

Setup: In 12 x 12 grid
• Three men and one soccer ball
• The ball starts on ground
• Pass the ball, and shout a number (1,2,3) – this is the number of touches the receiving player must use
• Move around in 12x12 grid
• Two pushups for mistakes

Variation
• Move to the air (juggling and heading)

EXERCISE 2
6 v. 3

Purpose:
Ball possession for the group of six and numbers down defending

Setup: 6 v. 3 in 20 x 40 area with four small goals on each line
• Rotate the 3 defenders quickly, they will get tired
• Blue keep ball, when yellow wins the ball, they attack side-line to side-line

Variations
• Change the number of touches (i.e., 1 touch, 2 touch, etc.)
• When blue loses ball, yellow gets ball

EXERCISE 3
6 v. 6 (can go as high as 8 v. 8)

Purpose:
Quickly attacking, decision making, reaction time

Setup: 6 v. 6 in 40 x 40 area, goals set up on each line
• Each team defends an end goal and two side goals.
• Attack goal across and two side goals.
• The extra players stand on the line around the field as supporting players

Variations
• Change the number of touches (must score with 1 touch shot for example)
• If the ball is lost in front of goal, opposing team cannot score there. They must find another goal
• One touch on the shot

EXERCISE 4
6 v. 6 plus goalkeeper

Purpose:
Focus, reaction, creativity, improve mental toughness

Setup: 6 v. 6 plus goalkeepers in 40 x 40 area
• Team that scores stays on
• Two-minute games
• After winning a game, if a team concedes a goal, they get 30 or 60 seconds to try to equalize
• Always leave and enter the field behind the goals

Variations
• After winning, the winning team has 1:30 to score a goal or they are out
• Can change the number on each team to make it tougher (e.g. 5 v. 6)

EXERCISE 5
The Vertical Game: 7 v. 7 or 8 v. 8 with player from each team standing together on end line

Purpose: To play the ball forward, without long balls

Setup: 7 v. 7 or 8 v. 8 on 50 x 60 area or half field
• A team scores if it can move the ball to one end and back, without the other team touching it.
• The team MUST use the player on the end line
• They must use the space between defenders, and not just hit long balls

Variations
• Change the touch requirement
• Play different numbers (e.g. 7 v 8, etc.)
