NSCAA Membership Fees Increase for 2009-10

The fees for NSCAA membership have increased $15 at all levels, effective with the beginning of the 2009-10 membership cycle on Sept. 1.

The standard membership fee, most commonly associated with high school and collegiate coaches, will be $95 for the coming year. Youth coaches will see their fee increase to $75.

The fee increase is only the second by the NSCAA since 2001. The Board of Directors weighed all options before choosing to approve the increase, realizing that it was necessary to keep pace with rising operational costs and maintain the current level of member service.

Current members who have valid email addresses on file with the NSCAA have received an electronic billing for the 2009-10 membership year. A paper billing will be distributed later this month. Renewals are being accepted online at this time. Go to http://www.nscaa.com/join.php and follow the Renew Online link to begin the process.

Coaches Corner
Coaching Corner: Developing Players in the Attacking Phase (Part 3)

Today’s exercise is the third in a series of warm-up exercises to develop players in the attacking phase of the game. As in the previous two exercises, players are shooting on a pair of offset goals in a half-field setup. The exercise opens with a double pass executed between players 1 and 2, with player 2 making an attacking run to goal. Upon receiving the return pass, player 1 then plays a vertical ball to player 3, who lays the pass off with one touch to player 2 for a shot on goal.

The double pass encourages players to look to make creative runs off the ball and look to engage in better combination play in the attacking third of the field.

From Looking Good to Winning (From the July/August 2003 issue of Soccer Journal)

The perspective from Holland is important because the Dutch have always been able to make soccer and the teaching of soccer simple. Although there are some similarities between the U.S. Soccer, NSCAA and KNVB perspectives, the Dutch Vision does have some specific and interesting nuances. The Dutch have long been known for playing wonderful soccer. The emphasis in Holland for many years was “looking good while playing the game.” Winning was a secondary concern.

Even after losing the World Cup final in Munich in 1974, the Dutch were satisfied because they played “much better than the Germans.” Many in the international soccer community viewed “The Orange” as the quintessential underachievers. That all changed in 1988. The Dutch won the European Championship in Germany and they beat arch-rival Germany in the semifinal. The Dutch discovered that winning was fun. As a result of that win, the KNVB changed the focus of soccer teaching and coaching in Holland. In a 1991 meeting of all KVNB staff at Zeist, the entire curriculum was redefined. The distinction between playing pretty soccer and playing to win became an integral part of the KNVB curriculum. The role of the coach and objectives of coaching at each age level were made very clear to all soccer coaches in Holland.

ESPN Coaches Fundraising

The ESPN Coaches Fundraising Program is a grassroots magazine fundraising program targeting sports associations and teams across the United States, Puerto Rico, Virgin Islands and Guam. Established in 2000, the program has helped teams raise funds for travel, equipment, uniforms and more. Through the ESPN Coaches Fundraising Program teams and organizations have raised over $15 million by selling magazine subscriptions.

The ESPN Coaches Fundraising Program is as easy as the players selling a few subscriptions to ESPN The Magazine. Every time a 2-year subscription is sold for $40, the team keeps $30 from that order. 75% of the total sale goes directly to the team. Each $30 raised from every order really adds up. If just 20 players sell five subscriptions each, the team will earn $3,000.

It’s a Win-Win situation!

When the team has completed the program, they just return $10 per order with the order forms. It’s that simple.

Coaches can sign up and receive their FREE personalized fundraising kit by going on line HERE or by contacting Pete Bryden (407-938-3423 or Pete.bryden@espn3.com) or Jessica O'Neal (407-938-3879 or Jessica.oneal@espn3.com).
