Five Favorite Practices -- Terry Michler and Mike Saif
This training session is from the book, Full Season Training Program (Elite Team/High School), authored by Terry Michler, the nation’s winningest high school coach with more than 800 wins. The book is available from www.worldclasscoaching.com. The diagrams were designed with Session Planner from www.soccerspecific.com. This article originally appeared in the January-February 2009 issue of Soccer Journal.

PRACTICE 1
1 v. 1 to side goals

Attacker has a choice of either goal to attack. Defender must react to the attacker’s movement and close down fast. Attacker may go to either goal at any time – defender must stay balanced and ready to change direction. If the defender wins the ball, continue to play in the same way.

PRACTICE 2
6 v. 4 in a 30 x 25 yard area with limited touch

Full buildup with 10 players involved. The playing area has been enlarged, as have the numbers. There are more options than ever with additional defensive pressure. Positional game with six outside players, against the four defenders, represents a game-like environment. The outside players play two-touch and the defenders stay compact, play in a diamond shape and play a ball-oriented defense. They should play pressure, two support players and a cover man (sweeper). On winning the ball, the four defenders will play 4 v. 1 on any line to leave the area.

PRACTICE 3
4 v. 2 in a 15 x 10 yard area playing with one goal with keeper

The three outside plus the keeper play possession (one- or two-touch) vs. the two inside players – when the inside player wins the ball, he immediately takes a shot at goal. If the keeper makes a save, resume possession play. Keep extra balls available to keep the game going. Use a full-size goal.

PRACTICE 4
Ajax shooting drill: up – back – deep – wide – serve – shoot

Back starts the ball up to midfielder and gets ball back – then plays a deep ball to the striker. The ball is then played back to the midfielder. When the striker receives the ball back from the midfielder, the next ball then goes to the winger. The striker and midfielder take up attacking positions in the box, the defender takes up a defensive position and the winger delivers a good serve into the box.

PRACTICE 5
Three teams of four with two teams playing against the other

The two teams are restricted to their respective end zones. The third team defends in the middle and tries to prevent penetrating passes to the opposite end zone. The teams in the end zones may move with their zone, but may not leave the zone. They are looking for opportunities to pass through the defenders to the receiving team. The defending team should establish and maintain a compact defensive shape with pressure, support and cover. When the defending team wins the ball, they exchange with the team that lost the ball.
