Coaches Corner
Coaching Corner: 4 v. 4 Counter Attacks

This week's tip continues in the theme of developing a transition mentality in your team, and will help reinforce the importance of a player’s first movement after his/her team wins the ball.

The exercise features a 4 v. 4 game on a 30-yard wide by 55-yard long field. Teams defend with three players, leaving one target player high. When the defending team wins the ball, they should look to immediately start the counter attack in one of three ways: dribble the ball forward (shown in the exercise); play a vertical ball to the high attacker’s feet and run into a supporting position; or play a vertical ball into space for the high attacker to create an immediate scoring chance. If none of these options is available, the team may hold possession to break the pressure, but the vertical option should always be an early choice.

Training with an Eye on Detail (From the July/August 2003 issue of Soccer Journal)

The emphasis in the Sporting Club of Portugal (SCP) youth program is on the identification and recruiting of players and development both athletically and academically once they are in the SCP program.

Sporting Lisbon has teams from 13 years of age until 18 under the heading of infantile and juniors. Once a boy reaches the age of 18 a decision must be made. Either he is promoted to the B team, loaned out to another club to develop or is released. Following the French model, academic opportunities are provided at a nearby school if the player lives at the Academia, the $13-million facility that houses training for all the teams from U-13 to professional and includes a hotel with 46 rooms. Players under the age of 13 are brought into the SCP program, but do not train at the Academia. They train at various locations around Lisbon. Occasionally they will go to the training center in order to see what lies ahead of them if they continue to develop.

The US Youth Soccer National Championship Series begins with more than 185,000 players on 10,000 teams competing in our yearlong competition starting with the US Youth Soccer State Championships. In June, the field narrows to 926 teams as state champions and select wildcards from the US Youth Soccer Regional Leagues advance to compete in one of four US Youth Soccer Regional Championships.

Only 12 teams will advance from each regional event to the US Youth Soccer National Championships in Lancaster, Mass., July 21-26. The Under-15 through Under-17 Boys and Girls age groups also include two teams representing the US Youth Soccer National League.

ESPN Coaches Fundraising

The ESPN Coaches Fundraising Program is a grassroots magazine fundraising program targeting sports associations and teams across the United States, Puerto Rico, Virgin Islands and Guam. Established in 2000, the program has helped teams raise funds for travel, equipment, uniforms and more. Through the ESPN Coaches Fundraising Program teams and organizations have raised more than $15 million by selling magazine subscriptions.
The ESPN Coaches Fundraising Programis as easy as the players selling a few subscriptions to ESPN The Magazine. Every time a two-year subscription is sold for $40, the team keeps $30 from that order. 75% of the total sale goes directly to the team. Each $30 raised from every order really adds up. If just 20 players sell fivesubscriptions each, the team will earn $3,000.
It’s a Win-Win situation!
When the team has completed the program, they just return $10 per order with the order forms. It’s that simple.
Coaches can sign up and receive their FREE personalized fundraising kit by going on line HERE or by contacting Pete Bryden (407-938-3423 or Pete.bryden@espn3.com) or Jessica O'Neal (407-938-3879 or Jessica.oneal@espn3.com).
