Coaching the Counterattack

Duration:
90 minutes
Climate: 85 degrees
Players: 14 + 2 GK
Organization: 60 x 40 yards, four 10 x 10 grids inside




Warm-Up
Organization: In Area B
Exercise: Everyone has a ball, moving in this area.
Dribble – On coach’s call:
• Five-yard change of pace/direction
• Perform any turn and change of pace/direction

Juggle – On coach’s call:
• Flick up, control on, volley (in/outside) and change of pace/direction
• Flick up (above head height) control on chest, and change of pace
• Flick up, control with head/knee

Stretch
Duration:
10 minutes










Warm-Up/Technical
Organization: In Area A
• Groups of 4
• One ball per player
• Each group starts at Point 1.

EXERCISE NO. 1
• Player 1, at three-quarters pace around Points 2, 3 and 4. Slowly dribble to Point 1.
• When Player 1 gets to Point 2, the next player goes.
Duration: 1.5-2 minutes work
Stretch: 2-3 minutes

EXERCISE NO. 2
• Up the tempo. When first player gets to Point 4 , get the ball in the air and juggle (slowly) to Point 1. At Point 1, take the ball on the half volley and away, attack Points 2, 3 and 4.
Duration: 1.5-2 minutes
Stretch: 2-3 minutes

EXERCISE NO. 3
• From juggling, ball above head height and control with head/chest…..
Duration: 1.5-2 minutes
Variation: • Change direction
• Right/left foot only
• Round cone with inside/outside of foot only

Coaching Points:
• Change of pace – Attack the cone!
• Quality on the ball -- close control
• Positive first touch. Confidence
• Positive mindset/attitude


































Technical Work
Organization:
• 40 x 15-20 (adjust accordingly)
• Four groups on 1, 2, 3 and 4
• Supply of balls
Exercise: Player 1 runs with the ball. On first touch, Player 2 chases. Once past halfway, Player 1 plays diagonal pass in to Player 4, who attacks the ball and repeats in the opposite direction. Three chases.
Progression: Player 1 has to cut across defender (figure on right above). Final pass – into feet/space.
Duration: 12-15 minutes
Coaching points:
• Be positive:
• With first touch (out of feet/into space)
• Attitude (confidence)
• Attack the ball
• On the ball:
• Attack quickly/head up
• Control
• Final pass:
• Correct weight/line
• Into feet/space
• Invite player to run onto it








Transition
Organization: 60 x 40 (two halves)
Exercise: 7 v. 7 in one half. Team in possession has to play ball into opposite GK. Every player must transfer into that half, get the ball and transfer back to other half.
• Ball played from one GK to the other successfully = 1 point.
• On a turnover, the ball has to go into the opposite GK
• Offside rule applies









Progression: To transfer, they must play a teammate into the other half with a pass before finding a GK. To transfer, they must dribble into the other half before finding a GK.
Variations: • Condition touches
• Ball into GK’s hands/feet.

Duration: 20 minutes
Coaching points:
• Timing/type of pass
• Timing/type of runs
• Speed of transition – catch team out of balance
• Desire/discipline to:
• Run off the ball
• Support early
• Create opportunities











Counterattack/Transition
Organization: 60 x 40, split into thirds
• 7 v. 7
• Two goals

Exercise: GK releases O defender into middle third or O’s play out. O defender attacks to make it a 4 v. 4 in the attacking third. Try to score. On the turnover, X’s release a defender into middle third and take advantage of a 4 v. 3. The weakest (nearest to goal) O recovers into defensive third and gets goal side.
• No tackling allowed in middle third.
• High tempo

Progression: Attacker is allowed to drop into middle third and receive ball from back. A defender can go in with him.
Variations: Add targets/wingers.
Duration: 20/25 minutes.
Coaching Points:
• Speed of play
• Timing/type of pass
• Timing/type of runs – support in front and behind the ball.
• Movement off ball
• Exploit weak areas left open
• Mindset – ready to change quickly from defense to attack


Finish with a 7 v. 7 game emphasizing the counterattack – 10 minutes.
