Speed of Play to Centrally Exploit the Flanks

Practice 1
Organization
• 15 x 15 yard grids
• Eight players per grid
• Three bibs
• One ball per grid

Practice
• Five maintain possession v. three defenders
• Specify a number of passes to equal one goal
• Bad pass out of the grid or interception by defender – last attacker to touch ball switches in

Progression
• Unlimited touch
• Two-touch
• One-touch
• Look for the split-splits to equal two passes

Key factors
• Emphasize movement off the ball
• Angle of support for the ball
• Deceptive passes

Practice 2
Organization
• 45 x 40 yard grid split in two
• Two teams of eight
• Eight red and eight blue bibs
• Two or three balls

Practice
• Start with an 8 v. 4 in one side of the grid , the other four defenders will be waiting in the other half
• Possessing team has two-touch and looks to combine 10 passes
• After 10 passes, possessing team plays ball across to waiting four
• Defending four joins their teammates to keep possession and four from the original possession team comes over to defend
• If defending team gains possession, they play three-touch to quickly send the ball to their waiting teammates

• Limit touches
• Increase number of passes
• Add more defenders

Practice 3
Organization
• 30 x 40 yard grid with a 15 x 20 center grid
• Three even teams (ie 6 v. 6 v. 6 or 8 v. 8 v. 8)
• Three sets of bibs
• Supply of balls
• One team as support players around outside of grid
• Coach outside grid with supply of balls

Practice
• Two teams play to maintain possession with two-touch in center grid, unlimited everywhere else. Ball may be played to support players outside.
• Support team has two-touch. They must play to the team which passes the ball outside or to another outside player.
• 10 passes equals one goal.
• If a team uses an outside player, the count goes back to zero. This is to challenge players to decide if it is more important to maintain possession or to force a pass to score.
• Play to three goals, then losing team switches with support team. Losing team does 50 crunches before they can be used. Using this during practice will force the possessing teams to work off the ball more because they have no supporting players.

Progression
• Inside team play two-touch or one-touch
• Support team plays one-touch
• Make field dimensions smaller
• Remove center grid

• Depth and width of attack
• Recognizing when it is better to possess than to move forward

Practice 4
Organization
• 60 x 40 yard grid split into three 20 x 40 yard sections
• Place two three-yard flag goals 10 yards in from the sideline in each end zone
• Three teams are split
§ Eight red, eight blue, four yellow
§ Red defends two goals
§ Blue defends to goals
§ Yellow always is the possession team
• Coach with a supply of balls outside the grid

Progression
• Limit touch in every zone
• Possession team needs to swing ball twice before attacking goal
• Introduce use of short-short-long combinations
• Must combine with a yellow to score
• If ball hits the ground on service, all players do 10 pushups

Practice 5
Organization
• Two teams – 8 v. 8 plus keepers
• 80 x 55 yard field with a 35 x 35 yard grid in center
• Two regular goals
• Supply of balls in both goals

Practice
• Teams will play unlimited touches everywhere except for center grid
• In center grid, two-touch restriction
• Team in possession must swing the ball twice before looking to go forward and score

Progression
• Lift restrictions and free play
