ESPN Coaches Fundraising

The ESPN Coaches Fundraising Program is a grassroots magazine fundraising program targeting sports associations and teams across the United States, Puerto Rico, Virgin Islands and Guam. Established in 2000, the program has assisted teams raise funds for travel, equipment, uniforms and more. Through the ESPN Coaches Fundraising Program teams and organizations have raised over $15 million by selling magazine subscriptions.
The ESPN Coaches Fundraising Program is as easy as the players selling a few subscriptions to ESPN The Magazine. Every time a 2-year subscription is sold for $40, the team keeps $30 from that order. 75% of the total sale goes directly to the team. Each $30 raised from every order really adds up. If just 20 players sell fivesubscriptions each, the team will earn $3,000.
It’s a Win-Win situation!
When the team has completed the program, they just return $10 per order with the order forms. It’s that simple.
Coaches can sign up and receive their FREE personalized fundraising kit by going on line HERE or by contacting Pete Bryden (407-938-3423 or Pete.bryden@espn3.com) or Jessica O'Neal (407-938-3879 or Jessica.oneal@espn3.com).

Coaching Corner: 1 v 1 with Servers

This installment of the Coaching Corner comes from the NSCAA book Soccer Skills and Drills, published by Human Kinetics. It comes from Chapter 6: Tackling. For information on how to order a copy of Soccer Skills and Drills, CLICK HERE.

Purpose: To receive repetitions of 1v1 defending with an ability to read the serve into the attacker and the opportunity to win the ball before the attacker receives it.

Procedure: In a small grid (about 10 by 15 yards), players play 1v1, scoring when one player dribbles across the end line of the grid. Place a server for each player on either his or her defensive or attacking end. When a goal is scored or the ball goes out of bounds, a new ball is played in by the server of the attacking player. For balls that go out of bounds, the player who last touched the ball becomes the defender, and the other player’s server plays a ball in to restart play. Play for one minute before players switch roles. If the server is on the defensive end, the attacker receives the ball with his or her back to the end line being attacked, and defenders get opportunities to defend players with their back to the goal. If servers are at the attacking end, they’ll be serving to a player who is facing their end, and the defender will be required to defend and attacker who is facing them with the ball.

Coaching Points: The 1v1 defensive points are the same as in the previous drill. Watch for how well defenders can read the pass and intercept the ball. Remind players that the best defense is not allowing the player to receive that ball. Also, remind players that when defending an attacker with his or her back to the goal, the defending positioning must be slightly tighter and that the objective is to keep the attacker from turning and facing the goal.
