Receiving Ground Balls and Shaping Off-Ball Runs

NSCAA Assistant Director of Coaching Education and Development Doug Williamson recently presented this exercise to assist players with both the technical (receiving ground balls) and tactical (shaping off-ball runs) aspects of play.

On a short, wide field (44 yards wide x 24 yards long), two teams of four play with two neutral attacking players. Players must touch the ball twice on each possession before scoring. Teams score by stopping the ball on the end line or stopping the ball in the end zone with the ball going in before the player.

Soccer Journal Archives
Published eight times during the year (seven printed versions and one online), Soccer Journal is the Official Publication of the NSCAA and is one of the few publications in the world produced exclusively for soccer coaches. Each issue contains technical and tactical articles, news and updates on important events, thoughts from opinion leaders in the sport and features on the interesting people and issues of the game.

In each issue of The Technical Area, an article from the Soccer Journal archives will be featured.

The curriculum for developing player skills must be appropriate for each age level. The articles in the Phases of Player Development series are from a report by the staff of the U.S. Women’s National Team.

Phase III of Player Development (U-16)—The Fervid Phase: The Dedication (from July/August 2003 issue of Soccer Journal.

This is a critical time in the player’s development. Many stop playing due to other interests, lack of success, shortage of playing opportunities, poor leadership or other reasons. Players tend to lack mental toughness and self-confidence. They tend to be self-critical and struggle with their desire to be competitive or need to be more competitive. There is a need for attention and security. A great focus on team spirit, leadership and discipline within the team.

From The Director's Desk

This installment features a technical report on the U-17 Women’s World Cup played in New Zealand. The report is the work of NSCAA member Joe de May, who attended the games and has several friends in the New Zealand Soccer Association. It may come as no surprise the North Koreans won this World Cup as they are one of the current "movers and shakers" in the world of women’s football. They certainly gave a good account of themselves in the 2007 Women’s World Cup. What happens in U-17 World Cups is often a precursor for the future. Joe’s account is very thorough and instructive.

ESPN Coaches Fundraising

The ESPN Coaches Fundraising Program is a grassroots magazine fundraising program targeting sports associations and teams across the United States, Puerto Rico, Virgin Islands and Guam. Established in 2000, the program has helped teams raise funds for travel, equipment, uniforms and more. Through the ESPN Coaches Fundraising Program teams and organizations have raised more than $15 million by selling magazine subscriptions.

The ESPN Coaches Fundraising Program is as easy as the players selling a few subscriptions to ESPN The Magazine. Every time a two-year subscription is sold for $40, the team keeps $30 from t hat order. 75% of the total sale goes directly to the team. Each $30 raised from every order really adds up. If just 20 players sell five subscriptions each, the team will earn $3,000.

It’s a Win-Win situation!

When the team has completed the program, they just return $10 per order with the order forms. It’s that simple.

Coaches can sign up and receive their FREE personalized fundraising kit by going on line HERE or by contacting Pete Bryden (407-938-3423 or Pete.bryden@espn3.com) or Jessica O'Neal (407-938-3879 or Jessica.onea
