ESPN Coaches Fundraising

The ESPN Coaches Fundraising Program is a grassroots magazine fundraising program targeting sports associations and teams across the United States, Puerto Rico, Virgin Islands and Guam. Established in 2000, the program has assisted teams raise funds for travel, equipment, uniforms and more. Through the ESPN Coaches Fundraising Program teams and organizations have raised over $15 million by selling magazine subscriptions.
The ESPN Coaches Fundraising Programis as easy as the players selling a few subscriptions to ESPN The Magazine. Every time a 2-year subscription is sold for $40, the team keeps $30 from that order. 75% of the total sale goes directly to the team. Each $30 raised from every order really adds up. If just 20 players sell fivesubscriptions each, the team will earn $3,000.
It’s a Win-Win situation!
When the team has completed the program, they just return $10 per order with the order forms. It’s that simple.
Coaches can sign up and receive their FREE personalized fundraising kit by going on line HERE or by contacting Pete Bryden (407-938-3423 or Pete.bryden@espn3.com) or Jessica O'Neal (407-938-3879 or Jessica.oneal@espn3.com).

Coaching Corner: Penetration and Possession (Part 3 of 3)

By Dr. Doug Williamson, NSCAA Assistant Director of Coaching Education and Development

The ultimate goal for any soccer team in attack is to penetrate an opponent’s defense and deposit the ball in the opponent’s goal. When immediate penetration is not possible, a team will endeavor to possess the ball until an opportunity for penetration arises. One of the most important lessons for a coach to help a team learn, therefore, is to recognize opportunities to penetrate an opposing defense while also recognizing the need for possession when penetration is not “on.”

In the accompanying exercise, a field 60 yards long by 30 yards wide is utilized, along with full-size goals and goalkeepers. All players except the goalkeepers begin off the field. The coach stands at the half field, off to one side, with the soccer balls.

Upon the call of “play” from the coach, eight players run around 4 cones, each 15 yards away from a goal on the touch lines and enter the field of play, with the players from one team given a 5-yard head start. A neutral player, who will always play with the team in possession, enters from half-field opposite the coach.

The coach plays the ball to one of the two back players on the team given a head start. The back players may not cross the half-field line until they have passed the ball to one of their two front players successfully (which means the front two players must gain possession of the pass). If the back players cannot penetrate immediately, they join the neutral player and their goalkeeper in possessing the ball until they can find an opportunity to penetrate across the half-field line. Two lines 15 yards from goal function as both as offside lines for the attacking players and as the top of the penalty area. The back receiving the ball initially may not play a pass forward on his or her first touch.

Once the ball has been played across the half-field line, the game is played “live,” 5v5+1. When the ball goes out of bounds, play for that round ceases. After a set number of serves from the coach (usually 6-8), the players switch starting points and the coach serves the backs on the opposite end for an equal number of opportunities. The objective for each team is to score on the full-size goals.

Key coaching points include encouraging players to recognize the earliest possible penetration without losing possession of the ball. Once the ball is played across half-field, the coach helps players create and maintain width, depth, and mobility in attack while recognizing opportunities to penetrate. As one might imagine, this exercise contains a significant fitness component—a bonus for coach and player alike!
