Online Pregistration for 2009 NSCAA Convention Registration Closes Sunday, December 14
The pregistration deadline for the 2009 NSCAA Convention is rapidly approaching.
If you plan on sending in your form, it must be postmarked by Friday, December 12. If you choose to register online for the 62nd Annual Convention, you have a couple of extra days. As has been the case the past few years, online registration will remain open through the weekend, closing at midnight (Eastern time) on Sunday, December 14. Any registrations received after these deadlines will be returned and the party must register onsite in St. Louis. When you go to register, do not create a new member log-in. If you don’t remember your log-in, e-mail Sandy Williamson at swilliamson@nscaa.com.

Chyzowych, McCrath Selected for NSCAA Hall of Fame
Gene Chyzowych of Columbia High School in Maplewood, N.J., and Cliff McCrath, formerly of Seattle Pacific University, have been selected as the 45th and 46th members of the National Soccer Coaches Association of America’s Hall of Fame.
The two will be inducted into the Hall at the Association’s Awards Banquet on Friday, Jan. 16, as part of the 2009 NSCAA Convention, to be held in St. Louis, Mo., Jan. 14-18.

Time is Running Out to Register for NSCAA Winter Residential Academies
It’s not too late to apply for one of the 2009 NSCAA Winter Residential Academies in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., and Cupertino and Santa Clara, Calif. The deadline is Friday (Dec. 5). Full payment for all residential courses must be submitted at that time as well.
Academies at the Holiday Inn and Suites in Fort Lauderdale include the National, Advanced Diploma and National Goalkeeping Diplomas. The National Diploma course will be offered at DeAnza College in Cupertino, Calif., while the Advanced National Diploma course is being offered at Santa Clara University.

Reminder – Take Part in the 2009 NSCAA Board of Directors Election
The National Soccer Coaches Association of America at present has 17 members on its Board of Directors. There are six officers (President, three Vice Presidents, Secretary and Immediate Past President) and eight constituent representatives serving membership in the youth (boys and girls), high school (boys and girls), college (men and women) and professional coaches (men and women) categories and three at-large positions. Additionally, the NSCAA Executive Director serves as a non-voting member of the Executive Committee and the Board of Directors.
The election of members of the Board of Directors is held prior to the annual meeting of the members in conjunction with the annual convention. This year’s election involves two officer positions (Vice President for Conventions and Awards and Secretary). The Nominations Committee, which is chaired by the Immediate Past President, presents the candidates listed below for your consideration.
Sign Up for the 2009 Algarve Cup

Be a Part of a World Record at the 2009 NSCAA Convention
Passback is a joint effort between the U.S. Soccer Foundation and Eurosport to collect new and gently used soccer equipment and redistribute it to those in need. For additional information, please visit www.passback.org.
In an effort to raise awareness about Passback, the Foundation is planning to break the World Record for the Longest Chain of Shoes at the 2009 NSCAA Convention in St. Louis, Mo, January 14–18. The current record stands at 10,500 shoes so in order to break the record, we will need to collect and display over 5,250 pairs.

Save 50 Percent on 2009 US Youth Soccer adidas Workshop Registration
Only a few days remain to save 50 percent ($100) during early registration for the 2009 US Youth Soccer adidas Workshop. US Youth Soccer is celebrating its 35th year in 2009, kicking off at the US Youth Soccer adidas Workshop in San Jose, Calif., March 5-7, 2009. Over 3,000 soccer coaches, administrators, referees and enthusiasts are expected at the organization’s annual convention held this year at the San Jose McEnery Convention Center.
Friday night is highlighted with the US Youth Soccer Awards Gala, followed by The After Party presented by adidas. On Saturday, the Kick Zone opens to provide an area for players featuring soccer games and great prizes. The exhibit hall and Kick Zone are free and open to the public Saturday only. ESPN Coaches Fundraising
The ESPN Coaches Fundraising Program is a grassroots magazine fundraising program targeting sports associations and teams across the United States, Puerto Rico, Virgin Islands and Guam. Established in 2000, the program has assisted teams raise funds for travel, equipment, uniforms and more. Through the ESPN Coaches Fundraising Program teams and organizations have raised over $15 million by selling magazine subscriptions.
The ESPN Coaches Fundraising Program is as easy as the players selling a few subscriptions to ESPN The Magazine. Every time a 2-year subscription is sold for $40, the team keeps $30 from that order. 75% of the total sale goes directly to the team. Each $30 raised from every order really adds up. If just 20 players sell fivesubscriptions each, the team will earn $3,000.
It’s a Win-Win situation!
When the team has completed the program, they just return $10 per order with the order forms. It’s that simple.
Coaching Corner: 1 v 1 to a Line
This installment of the Coaching Corner comes from the NSCAA book Soccer Skills and Drills, published by Human Kinetics. It comes from Chapter 6: Tackling. For information on how to order a copy of Soccer Skills and Drills, CLICK HERE.
Purpose: To provide repetition of defenders closing space and defending an attacker who is facing them and running at them with the ball.
Procedure: Two players stand on opposite end of a small rectangular grid with a small goal, which can be set up with cones (three yards or less in width) on opposite sides of each end line. The defender serves the ball acorss the grid to the attacking player and then steps into the grid to defend. The attacking player has three options to score - the attacker can pass through the small goal, dribble across the end line, or dribble through the small goal. The coach can assign the value of each scoring option to encourage defenders to prioritize the areas they defend. (For instance, passing through the goal scores two points, dribbling across the end line scores one point, and dribbling through the goal scores three points). This encourages the defender to channel the attacker to the outside, away from the small goal (representing the center of the field), and to protect that space, especially keeping the attacker from penetrating that space with the ball. When a goal is scored or the ball goes out of bounds, the opposite player serves the ball, and the players change roles. Four to six players can be assigned to each grid to provide rest between each 1 v 1 battle.
Coaching Points: Remind players to angle their approach to cut off the pass into the goal. Defenders should try to close the space in front of the attacker as quickly as possible while the ball is getting close to the attacker, but they should slow down as the as the attacker touches the ball so that their own momentum is not used to the attacker's advantage (to accelerate by the defender). Watch for players immediately assuming a good defensive stance. Observe for proper tackling decisions and technique:

If block tackling, is the weight balanced and behind the ball so that the defender has the physical advantage?

If poke tackling, is the defender trying to win the ball or just hit the ball out of bounds and stop the attacker?

Does the attacker provide the defender an opportunity to body tackle, giving the defender the chance to step in and win the ball?
