Quite possibly the soccer coaching book of the year. Sir Alex Ferguson and José Mourinho are two of the world’s top coaches, yet their tactics and systems are very different. This book describes the 4-4-2 system Ferguson uses with Manchester United and the 4-3-3 formation Mourinho has successfully employed at Chelsea and Inter Milan. For more information, CLICK HERE.

MLS Teams Launch Social Networks

Want to be closer to your favorite teams and players? Some MLS teams are attempting to make that easier by implementing social networks. One such network is the Houston Dynamo’s “MyDynamo” fan site, which launched Jan. 16 to the public. Fans can create profiles, set up blogs, add photo galleries and videos, and track the number of games they’ve attended among other features. Other MLS teams will follow so keeping up-to-date during the off-season won’t be difficult. Check out http://mydynamo.ning.com and, of course, log on to www.mlsnet.com for the latest MLS information.

ESPN Coaches Fundraising
The ESPN Coaches Fundraising Program is a grassroots magazine fundraising program targeting sports associations and teams across the United States, Puerto Rico, Virgin Islands and Guam. Established in 2000, the program has assisted teams raise funds for travel, equipment, uniforms and more. Through the ESPN Coaches Fundraising Program teams and organizations have raised over $15 million by selling magazine subscriptions.

The ESPN Coaches Fundraising Program is as easy as the players selling a few subscriptions to ESPN The Magazine. Every time a 2-year subscription is sold for $40, the team keeps $30 from that order. 75% of the total sale goes directly to the team. Each $30 raised from every order really adds up. If just 20 players sell five subscriptions each, the team will earn $3,000.
It’s a Win-Win situation!
When the team has completed the program, they just return $10 per order with the order forms. It’s that simple.
Coaches can sign up and receive their FREE personalized fundraising kit by going on line HERE or by contacting Pete Bryden (407-938-3423 or Pete.bryden@espn3.com) or Jessica O'Neal (407-938-3879 or Jessica.oneal@espn3.com).

Coaching Corner: Crossing to the Second Six-Yard Box

This installment of the Coaching Corner comes from the NSCAA book Soccer Skills and Drills, published by Human Kinetics. It comes from Chapter 8: Applying Techniques Tactically. For information on how to order a copy of Soccer Skills and Drills, CLICK HERE.

Purpose: To develop crossing skills in all players.

Procedure: The crosser will receive a rolling ball from the server. The crosser crosses to the second six-yard box as Attackers 1 and 2 make runs through it. the first (near-post) runner is the player farthest from the ball or the highest forward (Attacker 1). Attacker 2 holds his or her run to arrive in the second six a fraction later and diagonally behind Attacker 1. This gives depth to the runners so that if the cross is behind Attacker 1, Attacker 2 will be positioned to finish the cross. All players should perform this exercise because the dynamic nature of soccer demands that even backs may end up crossing or even getting on the end of crosses. This exercise should be done from both flanks.
