Coaches Corner
Crossing to Four Attacking Spaces in a Box

This installment of the Coaching Corner comes from the NSCAA book Soccer Skills and Drills, published by Human Kinetics. It comes from Chapter 8: Applying Techniques Tactically. For information on how to order a copy of Soccer Skills and Drills, CLICK HERE.

Purpose: To practice quality crosses into all attacking spaces in the box.

Procedure: This drill animation shows the same organization as the previous drill, but now the drill space at the top of the box is added so that the crosser has four possible crosses to execute: near post, back post, second six or top of the box. Attacker 3 is usually a midfield player who will leave the space alive by staying deep until he or she sees the ball being pulled back. Like the other runners, the midfield player wants to arrive in the space at the instant the ball arrives.

Variation: Once the players are familiar enough with the types for services, spaces and timing of runs, the coach will add Defenders 1 and 2. The coach initially asks defenders to find a player early and mark that player. With three runners, one will be free, and the crosser tries to hit that space. The crosser has no concern with trying to time the runner. The crosser’s role is to hit the correct type of cross to the appropriate space. The runner must time a run to arrive in the space at the same instant the ball arrives.

Coaching Points: To beat a defender, the attacker should drive to run behind his or her defender, and when the defender opens his or her shoulder to turn, the attacker will cut across the defender’s face before the defender can turn back to chase the attacker. The defender opening his or her shoulder is the signal for the attacker to sprint to the ball. The coach must be very flexible to ensure that players are experiencing some success. This might mean using only one defender or adding a fourth runner who will time a run to arrive in the midgoal area of the second six.

Soccer Journal Archives

Published eight times a year (seven printed versions and one online), Soccer Journal is the Official Publication of the NSCAA and is one of the few publications in the world produced exclusively for soccer coaches. Each issue contains technical and tactical articles, news and updates on important events, thoughts from opinion leaders in the sport and features on the interesting people and issues of the game.

Beginning with this issue, each The Technical Area will feature an article from the Soccer Journal archives.

The curriculum for developing player skills must be appropriate for each age level The articles in the Phases of Player Development series are from a report by the staff of the U.S. Women's National Team.

The success of the U.S. Women's National Team program is largely dependent on the quality of the programs that feed into it. True player development occurs when each player's daily training and playing environment is of the highest quality. If this environment is consistent, with a clear vision of what lies ahead for each player, development is then maximized.

From The Director's Desk

In this installment, NSCAA Director of Coaching Education and Development Jeff Tipping talks with Director of Coaching Emeritus Schellas Hyndman about with the importance of the mentoring process for young coaches and the critical need for coaching education, especially as the individual makes the transition from playing to coaching. The skills involved with playing do not automatically transfer over to the skills involved in coaching and managing. A good apprenticeship is necessary and that apprenticeship should involve education.

ESPN Coaches Fundraising

The ESPN Coaches Fundraising Program is a grassroots magazine fundraising program targeting sports associations and teams across the United States, Puerto Rico, Virgin Islands and Guam. Established in 2000, the program has helped teams raise funds for travel, equipment, uniforms and more. Through the ESPN Coaches Fundraising Program teams and organizations have raised over $15 million by selling magazine subscriptions.
The ESPN Coaches Fundraising Program is as easy as the players selling a few subscriptions to ESPN The Magazine. Every time a 2-year subscription is sold for $40, the team keeps $30 from that order. 75% of the total sale goes directly to the team. Each $30 raised from every order really adds up. If just 20 players sell five subscriptions each, the team will earn $3,000.
It’s a Win-Win situation!
When the team has completed the program, they just return $10 per order with the order forms. It’s that simple.
Coaches can sign up and receive their FREE personalized fundraising kit by going on line HERE or by contacting Pete Bryden (407-938-3423 or Pete.bryden@espn3.com) or Jessica O'Neal (407-938-3879 or Jessica.oneal@espn3.com).
