Refresh Your On-Field Thinking with NSCAA’s Quizzies

The change of seasons is right around the corner, and for many players and coaches, that means it’s time to be thinking ahead to and making preparations for spring seasons. Although the physical aspects of training are likely not to be overlooked, the mental part of the game may be neglected. Help your players sharpen their minds and their decision-making skills on the pitch by encouraging them to take the NSCAA’s Tactical Situations Tests (“Quizzies”) on NSCAA.com. These interactive web-based tests encourage quick thinking skills that potentially translate into positive game management habits. Why not have your team try all 16 sessions? It could pay off next season!

Receiving the Ball

NSCAA Director of Coaching Education and Development Jeff Tipping recently discussed the importance of players developing “soft feet” on the ball, much like Manchester United’s Dimitar Berbatov. This tip shares the setup and execution of an exercise that will help your players develop a good first touch on the ball.

This is such a critical technique that a lot of time is spent in the NSCAA Academy courses looking at various ways of controlling the ball with different areas of the body. The coaching points are the same no matter how the ball is received and come down to four simple basics:

1. Get in the line of flight.

2. Decide which body part you will use.

3. Present the body part to the ball.

4. Cushion the ball by relaxing the body part.

The fact of the matter is that these functions have to be performed in milliseconds, often under pressure, at strange angles and often moving at full speed. However, to be great a player requires a soft touch.

Soccer Journal Archives

Published eight times during the year (seven printed versions and one online), Soccer Journal is the Official Publication of the NSCAA and is one of the few publications in the world produced exclusively for soccer coaches. Each issue contains technical and tactical articles, news and updates on important events, thoughts from opinion leaders in the sport and features on the interesting people and issues of the game.

In each issue of The Technical Area, an article from the Soccer Journal archives will be featured.

The curriculum for developing player skills must be appropriate for each age level. The articles in the Phases of Player Development series are from a report by the staff of the U.S. Women’s National Team.

Phase II of Player Development (U-14)--The Formal Phase: The Commitment (from May/June 2003 issue of Soccer Journal).

Adult standards and formal rules become applicable. The pace of development quickens at this time due to the acceleration of physical and mental maturation. The demands of skill training as well as training loads should increase, thus provoking improvement with mental toughness, concentration and diligence. Awareness of tactics within the game becomes an important facet of the learning process. Players tend to be self-critical and rebellious, but have a strong commitment to the team.

From The Director's Desk
In this installment, NSCAA Director of Coaching Education and Development Jeff Tipping talks with former MLS Coach Sigi Schmid about managing the halftime break in this video presentation. He points out the dangers of giving the players too much information as well as certain important aspects of the management of halftime - which is in some countries called “the interval.”

We are looking for crazy tricks, outstanding moves, amazing goals, crazy plays during practice or a game (non-professional), but generally anything extraordinary and amazing in regards to soccer will do. ESPN Coaches Fundraising

The ESPN Coaches Fundraising Program is a grassroots magazine fundraising program targeting sports associations and teams across the United States, Puerto Rico, Virgin Islands and Guam. Established in 2000, the program has helped teams raise funds for travel, equipment, uniforms and more. Through the ESPN Coaches Fundraising Program teams and organizations have raised over $15 million by selling magazine subscriptions.

The ESPN Coaches Fundraising Program is as easy as the players selling a few subscriptions to ESPN The Magazine. Every time a 2-year subscription is sold for $40, the team keeps $30 from that order. 75% of the total sale goes directly to the team. Each $30 raised from every order really adds up. If just 20 players sell five subscriptions each, the team will earn $3,000.

It’s a Win-Win situation!

When the team has completed the program, they just return $10 per order with the order forms. It’s that simple.
Coaches can sign up and receive their FREE personalized fundraising kit by going on line HERE or by contacting Pete Bryden (407-938-3423 or Pete.bryden@espn3.com) or Jessica O'Neal (407-938-3879 or Jessica.oneal@espn3.com).
